The collection
This collection is called "El casado, casa quiere" and it's a reflection (as always) on my life right now. It's a meditation on marriage and the tropes of "married life", it's a domestic bliss fantasy; the Australian dream of "a quarter acre block & 2.5 kids" and how far from reality this now feels. It's a musing on turning 30 (my birthday is in 2 weeks!) and all the swirling desires and fantasies of this time. Honestly, I watched "Suddenly 30" the other day and it pretty much sums up the collection perfectly. (Also, spoiler alert but did you remember the ending?!? rather than living her "hollow existence" as a single flirty thriving magazine editor in NYC, the "happy ending" involves Jennifer Garner marrying her high school sweetheart and ending up living in a suburban home identical to her parents and like seemingly not having a fab interesting independent life/ career based on her boring tshirt.) but I digress...
The first thing I want to show the beauty team is the collections moodboard so they understand the colours/ vibes and themes:
The colours for the collection are many and varied but include mint, bubblegum pink, tomato red, lilac, violet, black & white, sunshine yellow, aqua, fawn and orange.

Beauty brief
As always with this brand, the mission is to allow the wearer to reject shame, act with love and dress how they feel, so we always want to highlight the models style and personality and show how the clothing is bringing that to life; the makeup will somewhat mimic this approach and be customised to each model. Carly has an amazing ability to add small unusual details in a somewhat minimalistic "clean" setting that has this effect. Here is some of her recent work that I love and captures this approach:

This look Carly did shows her stunning skin and special freckles but the lip and eye detail are so gorgeous. I love this one particularly because it does have a bit of a tween 80s "birthday party" feeling; like you don't fully know how to use makeup but for now you are happy with the high impact products like blue eyeshadow and your mums lipstick.

For me these three looks also by Carly have a similar "broke into your mums vanity/ birthday party" vibe which feels right for the collection.

I also like the idea for some models of leaning more heavily into the "birthday party" feelings and doing a more full on "face paint" look on some models. My dear friend and Sydney based artist Lily Golightly will be helping backstage and I would love for her to do some face paint looks (directed by Carly of course). Above is a very beautiful look Carly did for Elle Australia but it has that face paint feeling to me, below is me with actual 90s face paint.

Some of Lily's art that I feel so beautifully matches the collections feeling, and below my final beauty reference for Carly: Alannah Hill. Carly and I discussed this a little bit but there was such a fantasy to those stores, you would go in and the shopgirls would have full blushing beats, red lips and stilettos on. You wanted to be them and were so in awe of their glamour, especially as a teen who saved all your pocket money to buy a pair of Alannah hill socks. For me as a teen, growing up looked like becoming an Alannah Hill girl and I want the collection to have some of that feeling.

Hair
For the hair I cannot get the idea of "clean fluffy hair" out of my head; like that look when your hair is squeaky clean and sort of frizzy. You get ready for the party with fabulously clean brushed hair, but by the end of the day its a birdsnest. This editorial from Self Service magazine's 1998 issue; "Class of 1998" captures the feeling I am trying to describe perfectly.

Some other hair that has the right feeling:

That's the beauty direction for now. I am sure it will evolve significantly once I talk through it with the team and of course with the casting we end up doing as well. But for now this is where the mood is going.
